Snowy Sunday

8 Dec

We’ve had snow all day long.  It was a light powdery snow that looked pretty.

The birds were not as pleased with it.  I filled the bird feeders this morning, so they would have plenty to eat.

They were being horribly uncooperative.

I give them food in exchange for taking their picture, but I guess they didn’t want me to take pictures when they had food in their mouths.

They’re getting better.  In another couple of months, they won’t even flinch when I walk up to the window.

After eating all that dog food, bird seed and suet, they get thirsty.  Lucky for them, they have my bright blue cattle tank to drink from.

At least we’re a bit warmer, and there was no wind.  I think that might be changing overnight though.

the snow sure was pretty! glad the birds have you and your water supply, too.

    • Teresa December 8, 2013 at 7:19 pm #

They are certainly aren’t going to stare around here. Luckily, there are a lot of cattle tanks too.

How beautiful! My husband and I both looked at all of your photos. We haven’t seen a junco in years! And the speckled bird is new to us. What a snowy day ! Hope everyone in the barnyard stayed inside and warm! Hugs!

The speckled one (in the mosaic) is a grackle. They are actually considered a nuisance around here because they chase off most other birds and are noisy and messy. I still think they’re pretty, and they need to eat too.

I hung a couple of feeders from the eaves trough above the big window in the kitchen in hopes of some good photos but the birds are wary of my movement too.
People that don’t feed the birds don’t know what they’re missing, do they?

    • Teresa December 8, 2013 at 8:32 pm #

They really don’t. Of course, there’s a lot birds that like to eat Stella’s dog food. That’s what’s in the blue jay’s mouth in the photo of the three birds in the tree.

You are so kind to the birds…I’m sure they let their friends know about “the lady on the farm with the goats…she’s got good food and water!” 🙂

    • Teresa December 9, 2013 at 6:35 am #

Probably! I do go through a lot of dog food in the winter!

  5. Poppy December 9, 2013 at 3:11 am #

Beautiful images of your surroundings! The blue jays are so adorable, even though I know they can be nosy. Thanks for sharing this much needed hit of winter’s spectacular splendour for this uprooted Greek Canadian, living on the island of Crete!

    • Teresa December 9, 2013 at 6:39 am #

Glad you enjoyed the stop. I’m sure I’ll be sharing lots of winter photos for the next few months. A Mediterranean island sounds nice about now.

The snow is pretty, we had about 7inches of snow yesterday. The snow does attract more birds to the feeders. I take a lot of my photos from the window too. Thanks for linking up to Saturday’s Critters. Have a happy week!

    • Teresa December 9, 2013 at 6:36 am #

Glad you’ve started Saturday’s Critters. I really need to wash my windows, and I might have better results. 🙂

I think the birds can survive this winter because of you.

    • Teresa December 9, 2013 at 6:38 am #

It’s lucky they live in an area where there’s usually abundant food. I just make it a little easier for a few of them.

…they may not have been cooperative for you and your lens, but they’re all so beautiful. I think your photos are very good. For me, there is nothing like a blue jay in the snowfall….there is something about them and their color that makes winter all the more pretty.

    • Teresa December 9, 2013 at 6:37 am #

Thanks, Anni. The jays are wonderful!

  9. Anne December 9, 2013 at 8:59 am #

Beautiful photos, but cold looking too!

    • Teresa December 9, 2013 at 9:01 am #

Thanks, Anne. Yesterday with the snow we were a lot warmer than today!

    Hello Teresa,

You’re a good friends to these cold, hungry birds. Thanks for the bluebird shots.

Please consider returning and leaving a comment for me.
    Happy Blue Monday!

I do love the blue jays!

The birds are so pretty 🙂 What are the goats doing on this winter day?

    • Teresa December 9, 2013 at 9:52 am #

They actually went out to pasture in the morning before there was too much snow. They spent all afternoon in the barn, and then they came out to eat when I fed them.

    Awesome serie!
    Great for BM too!

  14. Gunilla Bäck December 9, 2013 at 12:35 pm #

Poor little things! They’re lucky they have you to supply them with food and water.

    • Teresa December 9, 2013 at 12:56 pm #

There’s no way I can feed them all, but they do have quite a bit with all the farm animals that get fed around here.

Lovely captures of the birds enjoying the snow!

    • Teresa December 9, 2013 at 12:56 pm #

Thanks, Karen. Not sure they were all enjoying the snow, but they did like the food!

We had snow here yesterday too! I love your two shots of the Blue Jay – it’s a Blue Jay, right?

    • Teresa December 9, 2013 at 1:27 pm #

Yep. That’s a blue jay. They are quite happy to hang out on the deck eating dog food.

It really was a pretty snow!

  19. DrillerAA December 9, 2013 at 5:51 pm #

My bird feeders have been standing room only as well this past week.

    • Teresa December 9, 2013 at 6:05 pm #

There’s no way I can even pretend to keep up with them.

  20. Ralph December 9, 2013 at 8:08 pm #

How nice you are to assist the wintering birds as they endure the often brutal (to a bird) Iowan winters. The food is what they crave and love the variety of foods they may enjoy – although happy with the buffet, they seem to exhibit a hint of modesty when they are eating. We saw a blue jay outside today, lovely birds…back east, we have not had the extreme cold you have had – hope all your critters continue to endure the frigid temps!

    • Teresa December 9, 2013 at 8:22 pm #

So far, everyone is handling the cold. We’re back below zero again this evening.

  21. Little Wandering Wren December 9, 2013 at 10:46 pm #

Well I think you’re doing really well with your bird photos! You are very generous with your food so I’m sure they will always be back for more food and photos – love the way you have the snow across your blog!

The snow is a WordPress thing, and it will be here until the first of January. 🙂 The birds are very happy to come eat dog food.

Nice pictures, pure poetry, a wonderful place to enjoy walking in the snow!

    • Teresa December 10, 2013 at 12:17 pm #

The day it snowed was pretty nice, but it’s too cold to go out walking now.

  23. bettyl-NZ December 10, 2013 at 3:34 pm #

I admit that I love to see snowy photos and yours are awesome!

    • Teresa December 10, 2013 at 3:44 pm #

Thanks, Bettyl. I do like the snow, but it’s starting awfully early this year.

  24. Gemma Wiseman December 10, 2013 at 6:38 pm #

I don’t know much about snowy worlds, but all I do know is we have the chilled winds right now without the prettiness of snow. And this should be our summer. No idea what happened. Lovely series of photos.

    • Teresa December 10, 2013 at 7:28 pm #

Well, I hope your cold winds aren’t as cold as ours. Hope you warm up too. 🙂
