Weekend Work

6 Dec

All of my work with Benji finally paid off.  He is doing much better.  I guess he picked up coccidia because the grass is eaten down.  I’m giving them hay every day, but they still try to eat fresh stuff.

Benji with Lemuel

Anyhow, he’s doing much better.  I figured he’d be fine; but there really is always something with a herd this big (and old).

I also got the tarp shelter down this past week. I still don’t have the tarp put over the barn windows, but I’m making progress.

I also managed to get hooves trimmed for both Benji and Frodo.

Two of my big boys also got their hooves trimmed.

Myson and Moose

It was a bit of a challenge trimming Moose’s hooves because he was not cooperating.  In addition, as I was bent down, I had Casey and Ava rubbing my head.  Occasionally, just for fun, Casey would also pull my hair.  I swear, I have way too much help around here some days.

I’ve also started filling the dumpster.  It’s mostly a lot of big old tubs and buckets that the goats have destroyed.  They just don’t fit in regular garbage pickup.

I still have to get the chicken pen cleaned out, but I’m making progress!

After a week of nice weather, we’re back to more seasonable temperatures.

I had to plug the heaters back in all the water tubs.

I am so grateful for heated tubs.  They do make it much easier.

I Love Fall

21 Oct

Fall really would be perfect if it weren’t for the higher worm risk in the goats.  Honestly, I love it.

Aurora and Odie

There are lots of walnuts for the squirrels.

I have very few trees that get brilliant colors.

I love harvest, even when it’s not my crops being harvested.

And we’ve gotten into real fall, even though we’re still warmer than usual. I have to say, I’m also excited about the fall photo shoots I have scheduled.  I’ve been scouting locations.

And I’ve been preparing for the newborn shoot.  Honestly, I’m not used to pink and lace.

I also am going to take full advantage of a late October baby.

My mom made me a newborn candy corn hat (being modeled by a doll)!

I’m so excited for this shoot!  I swear, if I could fill my schedule with newborn shoots, I would totally do it.

Breeding Groups

16 Oct

The last few years, it seems like the goats have been on their best behavior for me getting them put into breeding groups.  Not this year.

Xerxes and Joani

On Wednesday, I managed to get all but Antigone where they belonged after a ridiculous amount of work and chasing goats and bribing with food and having some fat wethers and Pretzel constantly in my way. I might have broken numerous fingernails, broke a blood vessel on the palm of my hand and smacked myself in the forehead with a cattle panel. But I got everyone where I wanted them!

Well, I did also adjust where I put Hera because she jumped over the fence somewhere in the process, and I decided she’d be more likely to stay up north.

Hera running from Freddie

I will say Benji and his girls were the easiest.  Benji just followed Freddie into the buck room and stayed there while I led Freddie out and shut the gate.

Benji is so cute!

Then, I just had to drag the little girls across the barnyard, and they aren’t as hard to drag as a big girl.  And Chiffon came in the milk room without me even having to drag her!

Anyhow, Thursday I finished the process by getting Antigone where she belongs, so Xerxes has: Antigone, Zinnia, Joy, Hilda, Daisy, Athena, Penelope, Margarita, Ava, Astra, Cutie, and Joani.

I also put Caroline in with Xerxes, but she was on my “Do I? Don’t I?” list, so I didn’t give her a shot to bring  her into heat.  I guess I’ll just see if she comes into heat or not.

Caroline

Freddie has: Flora, Aphrodite, Purl, Cupid, Hera, and Bubbles.  I was actually going to put Hilda in with him again, but I was too tired to drag her that much farther across the barnyard.

Benji has: Venus, Chiffon, Trace, and 2TC

And I’m going to go out on a limb and call Bubbles the first one due for spring break kids!  Freddie’s going to have a hard time getting to Purl if she stays up there.

Hopefully, most of them will come into heat.
