A Little Bundle of Joy

7 Jun

I’ve had some of the girls who are close to kidding shut in, so my mom can check them while I’m at work.  I have Zinnia, Aphrodite, and LilyAnn in the greenhouse.

I haven’t decided when Aphrodite and LilyAnn are due, but they look closer than my original estimate–like they might have been bred right away like Zinnia and Cookie.

If you have to lay down to eat your sweet feed, you’re definitely ready.

Wednesay evening, I noticed that Penny’s udder had suddenly filled.

It also made the place she ripped her udder come back open.  Poor girl.

Anyhow, I put her in the Love Shack with Cookie and her girls.  That way she’s not running around in the tall grass with that udder injury.

She is due on Saturday, and it’s good for her to get a bit of TLC and sweet feed while she’s this close.  My mom is spoiling her by brushing the rest of her winter coat out.

Then, at 3:00 am Thursday morning, Zinnia had her baby girl!  A beautiful little bundle of Joy.

Zinnia and Joy

Mom is doting and protective, and she keeps snorting at me when I get close to her baby.

I don’t care if Zinnia wants me to stay away.  She’s going to be a nice sweet little girl.

Joy

Unlike Cookie’s little hooligan girls.

These two are wild things!   Monday is my last day of work before summer break.  I will be glad to be home with everyone.

Their Forever Farm

8 Oct

You know, it seems like every time I talk about something with the goats, it’s how the copper deficiency has impacted it.  Today is no different.  Milk–the copper deficiency impacts their production.  I’ve also noticed in the last few years that I just can’t keep them in milk.  They dry up well before I’m ready for them to.

Haley

I used to milk until it got too cold in the open chicken building or the first of February when I had to let them dry up to make colostrum for the next year’s kids.

Millie’s udder

This year I’ve already had two completely dry up on me and Zinnia is drying up quickly.  I’m sure getting the copper back in their systems will fix it, but I don’t know how many years it will take.

That means, I had to let the woman who had planned on taking Aphrodite and Hera know that she wouldn’t be able to milk them the way she wanted.

Hera

That also means that they are now just staying here.

As long as Hera will decide to let me touch her again.

She hasn’t let me touch her since I had to put the horn apparatus back on her.

Goats and Goslings

29 May

Last night Vixen didn’t want to go back out to pasture.  She was trying to rest in the Love Shack, but the geese on nests tried biting at her when she was trying to get comfortable.  So I put a panel across keeping her safe from the geese.  Bud also decided he didn’t want to go out to pasture.  He hurt his back leg and I think the meds the vet gave him were wearing off.  I gave him another dose of pain killer/anti-inflammatory medicine, but he was flopped out (on top of a goose nest) acting like he was dying.  The other goose on her nest thought he was a bit melodramatic.

Bud was feeling better again this morning, and he went out to pasture.  I do still have Vixen shut in.  I’m not sure when she’s due, but her udder is big enough she’s rubbing it raw (the little pink triangle).  I figure she can rest and eat hay in the Love Shack until she kids.

When I went to go get her some hay, I opened the door and saw this.

When I came back to show my mom, there was another gosling!

Aren’t they cute! I love how they are snuggled together!  With so many eggs left under her, who knows how many she’ll end up with.

Hopefully, someone will be able to actually raise one or two.

Finally, here’s random picture of my goofy Fionn.

He had been trying to head butt a fence post when I said his name.

I do hope you’ll consider coming back to join me for Friday’s Hunt next week.  The items are at the top of my sidebar.

Today I’m sharing with The Good. The Random. The Fun., Monday Mellow Yellows, Macro Monday.
