This and That Around the Farm

30 Aug

Things are busy as usual.  In the soap room, I’m making feta and Mozzarella.

I looked like a heart when I cut it. I couldn’t resist having fun.

The feta is something that I have to do on weekends because it’s not hard, but it does take all day to get a batch done.

I’m still getting a few strawberries.

Yes, I’m still feeding them to Mama Phoenix.

I’m trying to figure out what I’m going to do with her once the weather turns cold.  There’s no way I can leave her out in the barn, but I’m not sure how I can bring her in the house (cats and dog).

The silly free-range chicken is still doing whatever she wants.  I’m fine with it as long as she stays away from the dog and goes back so I can shut her in to stay safe at night.

I still have a counter full of tomatoes ripening.

I’m keep working on canning them.

Sometimes, I feel really guilty because I don’t spend enough time tending to my yard, but sometimes I see that I have a flower going to bloom that is really just a weed.  I’m going to call it a flower though and enjoy the benefits of neglecting the yard.

Snickers is hanging in there. I’m cooking him an egg twice a day.  He enjoys lounging on the deck in the evening.

Fionn is still in the Love Shack.  I think he’s feeling better because he’s back to his old hobby of trying to beat the walls down.  Seriously?

Fionn–by the way, the sway back is also a sign of the copper deficiency.

Sky misses me with the school year starting. He lays by the gate and gives me those sad puppy dog eyes every time I have to go out to the barnyard.

I’m looking forward to a three day weekend to try and get caught up a little bit.

Mama and the Strawberries

14 Aug

The strawberry plants I got this summer are doing well in their pots.  They are making runners, which I’m trying to get started in little pots.

When they are well rooted, I want to separate them from the parent plants and put them in this tower.

By next spring they should be well established and ready to make strawberries.

In the meantime, there’s just a few strawberries on the plants this summer.

Most of them have been fed to Mama Phoenix.

She likes them.

You’ll notice, I’m also letting her out in the barnyard when everyone is out in pasture.  That way she has a bit more room and opportunity to act like a chicken.

She seems to enjoy it.

Pretties

10 Jul

It’s quite pretty on the farm right now.  The waterways got baled right before the last rounds of rain began.  Having the waterways mowed also lets you see how the beans are growing.

I have several varieites of lilies blooming right now.

There have been lots and lots of butterflies this summer.  I think they like all of the rain.

I found a few wild raspberries up around my house.  This one by the deck has actually given me a few berries.  I was also fortunate enough to have someone gift me with a buck of raspberries.  Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.  They are my favorites!

I am always surprised when I find mallow blooming.  I planted it years ago, and the beds where I planted it have all been overgrown, but these little flowers keep finding places to grow.

I was also pleased to note that my white gooseneck flowers seem to be making a come back.  I really need to clean up the flower beds. They were neglected for years with my Great Pyrenees and the goats in the yard.

The barn swallows are busy raising babies.

A little fritillary.

I am also seeing a few strawberries on the plants I put in pots.  Of course, the shepherd’s hook couldn’t support them in the saturated ground, so I had to move them, but they are doing well.

I also have impatiens blooming. They were a Mother’s Day gift.

Impatiens I received for Mother’s Day.

I think all the little meadowlarks have fledges based on the number of them I’m seeing in pasture.  I can’t take more than a step or two before one flies up in front of me.

The yucca plant is also blooming right now.

Nothing beats Iowa’s beauty this time of year.
