Reunited

21 Jan

Since Harley danced the rumba with Fionn, I moved her back into the big herd.  Much easier not to carry hay to extra goats on the other pasture.  It also has made Red very happy to have his maa back.

I’m just pretending the whole Red not getting sold situation isn’t a problem and ignoring it.  That isn’t admitting that I’m going to keep him, but I’m just going to ignore the situation.

Changes in the Herd

14 Jan

Last night I caught my June kids that needed to be sold and penned them in the Love Shack.

Well, Strawberry and Vanilla were in the yard, and I left Red out because I had to spend the night steeling my heart to selling him.

Of course, I woke this morning to the kids crying because their moms were going out to pasture without them.  That means Red was going out to pasture.  After I spent so much time telling myself how I want the herd to be smaller and I don’t need another wether, well, he’s still here.  We’ll see if I get motivated to actually take him to the sale some Saturday.

Y0u might noticed that I said Strawberry was leaving.  Well, I was going to keep her, but, like I said, I do want the herd to shrink in size.  I also decided to make a selection that has a better build.  Just so you don’t think I’ve turned all good livestock farmer, I also wanted to keep this girl because I retired her mom (bad livestock farmer) and I just wanted to keep her last girl.  Princess is staying here!

I also kept Bambi’s girl, Daisy.  I think she’ll be a good milker.  She’s grown really well too.

Of course, I am keeping Ava as a milk doe also.  She’s been such a little stinker lately (a throwback to her great-grandma Meg’s personality).  She’s been butting all the other kids (especially Elmer).

I thought Ava might like company since she is by herself right now, so I put Cutie in the barnyard (she lost her two yard kid companions too), but Ava was being a little stinker to her.  Ava about knocked Cutie off her feet.

Hopefully, everyone will adjust quickly.

Losing Bits and Parts

20 Oct

If you remember, I had my little bucks banded to castrate them.  Typically, it’s safe, easy, and not likely to have complications.  They all looked like this as things were dying and drying up.

A couple of days ago, I noticed that my first little boy was completely free of his extra parts.  That’s how it usually happens.  They just fall off.

Well, Tuesday ended up being a bit unusual.  It started with me finally making my phone call to the vet to get an appointment for my little Bob cat.  He had been in another fight and I knew he had torn a claw.  It wasn’t getting better.  The vet pulled the claw off and gave him an antibiotic shot.

That evening, while I was walking in pasture, I took a picture of Red.  I thought I saw wet on his dried up parts.  Well, the skin had come down and revealed he still had living tissue.  Now about three inches was exposed.  I called the vet.  He sutured things and removed what was left of the scrotum.  The vet said he’d never seen anything like that either, so I did feel better.

After the vet’s visit, Red is all better now, but I never want to have to see any of my babies go through that again.  Poor boy.

For the record, I love and appreciate my vets, but I’d like to go a week or lots more before I have to call them again.  I’m sure the feeling is mutual.

I hope you’ll come back to join me for Friday’s Hunt tomorrow.  I have the items for this week at the top of my side bar.
