More From My Long Weekend

29 Nov

In addition to winterizing on the long weekend, I did some routine work on the goats.  I had several of them come in to get their hooves trimmed.

Bambi even came in to get her hooves trimmed!

I also canned another batch of vegetable stock.  This should last me most of the winter.

I’m still milking Zinnia and Joy.  I’m still drowning in more milk than I can go through, so I decided to make mozzarella sticks.

My mom came out and we set up an assembly line to get them done.

Of course, Sky (and Tiger) were mostly underfoot the entire time.

I’m also still making and delivering yogurt to the family, but they need to eat it much more quickly.

The Kidding Quandary

18 Nov

Of all the years for only half the girls to settle for spring break, this was not the year for that to be okay.

Chiffon is open.

One reason is because I don’t want to have a lot of little kids when I’m on vacation.  They tend to have a hard time keeping up in pasture, and I don’t want them spending the night out there.

Pretzel and Rosie–this year’s June babies

The other part of it is the large number of my milking girls who did not get bred.  Joy is the only one who will be kidding in March.

I might have to enlist Cupid as a milking doe.  She was pretty good about it when I tried milking her this year.

Although, I’m still trying to figure out the milking when I go on vacation, so it might be better for them to have babies before I leave and then I can wean when I get back.

Astra and Perdita (who is still not fully weaned)

With all this uncertainty, it makes me even more happy that my freezer is full.  And if you think I’m kidding, I don’t think I can fit any more in there.

I just made another double batch of mozzarella to turn into mozzarella sticks for my family’s Christmas Eve gathering.

I’m also making a lot of yogurt.

I like the problem of so much milk I don’t know what to do with it all.

More of the Weekend Work

24 Sep

I shared that Saturday was really busy and productive.  Sunday was a continuation of the preserving.  I had to finish making the relish after it sat overnight.

Then my mom came out and we worked on making Mozzarella sticks from the four batches of cheese I had made.

You can see Sky was helping too.  As long as you don’t mind not being able to move.  Silly dog.

Mom and Sky

Then mom and I did a bunch of rearranging and locating jars and delivering canned goods to my son and nephew.  I can honestly say, I will be grateful to rest when the canning and milking season is done.
