Mother and Daughter

3 Dec

Astra and Perdita seem to have come into heat together. They were both hanging out by the buck pen in the morning, but when they went to pasture, Perdita focused on eating.

Astra, on the other hand, continued to yell to Xerxes across the pasture.

Seriously….

Xerxes was patiently waiting for her to come back to his fence.

Luckily, she didn’t find a spot big enough to get through.  That’s good; I would prefer to stop with just two girls having oopsie kids.

A Beautiful Weekend

7 Nov

We had beautiful weather this weekend; honestly, it was way warmer than it should be this time of year.

They noticed me and had to come see what I was up to.

Antigone seems to want to know why I’m spying on them.

I took advantage of that to go walking in pasture both Saturday and Sunday.

I also decided to take advantage of the good weather and let Gidget out of the Love Shack.  She’s been in there for two weeks, and she is much better.  I’m not sure how much more improvement I’ll see, so I decided it was best to let her rejoin the herd and be happy. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll still keep trying to get her extra food.

It’s like Grand Central with all the goats who think they should get to go into the milk room for extra food.

Tansy still gets to come in for a bit extra food too.

Of course, I also found Astra making out with Xerxes at the fence.  That means she’s in heat and didn’t settle for spring break babies.  Dang.

The neighbors have their corn harvested, so they let the cows out on the field.

It looks like the fence is going to keep them out of my field this year; plus I don’t have corn out there for them to snack on, so they are content where they are at.

My goats seem pretty happy with the weather and pasture too.

I’m not sure how many more of these nice days we’ll have this fall.

More Girls in Heat

29 Oct

Since I last updated you on the breeding progress, I’ve had a couple more girls come into heat.  I was a bit surprised to see Zinnia in heat.  Really.  She looked like she was in heat and Xerxes bred her.

Zinnia

But she was really acting like she was in heat last Friday.  I know because my otherwise wonderful girl can’t keep from getting her head stuck in the fence when she’s in heat.  It’s rather annoying actually because I had to remove her head from the fence to milk her that morning.  Then I had to remove it from the fence again when I was getting ready to leave for work.  I got smart and left the hole open (instead of bending the cut chunk of panel back into place).  That worked because she was not stuck when I got home.

Anyhow, I don’t know what is going on with her.  I’ll just wait and see if she gets her head stuck again.  Chiffon was also in heat.

I wasn’t sure about her when she was with Benji, but Friday evening, she was definitely in heat.

Most recently Aphrodite and Venus seem to have come into heat.  I really wanted to have as many of the girls kid in March as possible.  Partly because it’s just healthier for the moms and kids, but also because my mom and I want to go on vacation next summer, and I don’t want little kids to worry about.

My list of girls to have June babies is growing.  Dang.
