We’re Hot

13 Jun

For the last four days, we’ve been about ten degrees above our historic average, and it looks like it’s going to continue for another four days.  So far in the month of June we’ve had not a drop of rain. That means it’s been miserable weather for kidding and everything.  Today, I moved Pistol and her kids to the greenhouse because it’s a little cooler.  I could open the east door and at least let some air through.

Every time the goats come up from pasture, they want a drink of water (kids too), so I’ve been filling the tubs several times each day.

Poor Maggie and Harley do not do well in the heat, and with new babies, I have them up with Minnie and Helen so they don’t have to go out to pasture.

All day today, I kept an eye on Clover.  See the red mug on the bench?

Clover

In typical Pistol fashion, she decided to bust the top out of it today.  Brat.  I’ve been using that mug for my iced tea for twenty-one years.

Finally, Clover had her kids.  In keeping with the Sam tradition, we have a huge buck with wattles and a nice sized girl with wattles.

Poor Cookie’s boys have had some lung issues.  I’m not sure if they didn’t get the fluid all cleaned out or if they caught a touch of something, but they were open mouthed panting when I checked them, so they went into the milk room.

That made milking a bit more fun this evening.  Yes, the black and white one (they really need names) is peeing on my floor.

I just took them back out to Cookie to nurse.

You can see, they are still favoring one side.  I’m still milking some out to make it easier for them to nurse.  I’ll keep checking them to see if they need to go back into the milk room for a while this evening.

My poor old geese are panting.

The llamas are actually handling the weather fairly well.  Granted, they are spending a lot of time in the barn, but they are not seeming stressed.

I usually have the dog out in the yard whenever I’m doing anything outside because it scares me to leave him in the house with Rocky.  They have way too much fun.

The good news is that we have a decent chance for a bit of rain overnight.  That would be good.  I’m really ready for the break to more normal temperatures though.  You want to know the really good news?  With Clover having her kids, I will actually get to sleep all night tonight!  I’m excited!

I hope you’ll come back to join me for Friday’s Hunt.  I have this week’s items listed at the top of my side bar.

A New Chicken

29 May

I seem to have a new chicken.  Do you see him?  No.  Not the rooster.

The first time I saw him I was walking into the building to feed the chickens and went flying out past my head.  I’m not sure which one of us was more startled.  The gander seemed entertained by him.

He likes to just hang around.

Well, I guess he likes to eat the corn too.

I’m guessing he could get used to the room service in the chicken pen.  I think it also means I need to do a lot of work on my chicken pen.

I do hope you’ll come back to join me for Friday’s Hunt.  I have this week’s items at the top of my side bar.

Friday’s Hunt v2.27

30 Dec

Welcome back to Friday’s Hunt.  I want to thank everyone who joined in last week.  I had a lot of fun visiting everyone who linked up.  It’s very simple.  Anyone can participate.  The link opens at 7pm Central time and will close Sunday at 7pm, so you have plenty of time to enter. Because of the holidays, I’ll extend the deadline for joining this week to Monday at 7pm.  Hopefully, you’ll be inspired to visit some of the other entries.

If you didn’t participate this week but would like to next week, we’ll be starting our third round!  The topics will be:  Starts with A, Week’s Favorite, and beginning.   I will always keep a list of the items for the coming week in my sidebar at the top.  I am crazy busy with teaching and working on the farm right now, but I will make sure to visit all participants.  Without further ado, here’s my interpretations for the week.

Starts with any letter:  Well, this is really difficult when the letter isn’t assigned.  So many possibilities!  OK!  Starts with B:  A bird bath in the hay leaves him looking beautiful!

Week’s Favorite:  My mom has been cleaning and clearing things out of her house.  She found an old barn picture board frame that my dad made and gave to me.  I decided to have this picture of my corn printed on metal and put in it.  I really like the way it turned out.

Celebrate:  I am trying to do more relaxing things this coming year, and one way I’m doing that is to take an on-line art journaling class.  The first task was creating the journal we will be using.  Here’s mine.  Just creating the journal has felt like a celebration!
