Just Cows

10 Oct

It was nice Sunday, so I went for a walk in pasture.  I think the cows look like they are enjoying the Back Forty.

Although, the naughty little rump roast didn’t look too sure about me.

It’s Too Hot

23 Sep

We are having record heat today.  It’s been horribly hot for several days now, and we have one more to go before there’s a break in the weather.

Most of the animals are hanging in there okay.  I did notice last night that it was kind of a strain on my cattle tank and well.

They drained the tank.  As fast as the water was coming in, 2J80 was slurping it up.

They eventually drained the holding tank in the well.  Poor Green 25 was not getting in to drink, and she was panting horribly.

I did give her a few partial buckets of water that I had out for the goats.  That seemed to help.  Then I did hose her down a bit too.  I went out to check her in the Back Forty today, and she’s still  stressed.

There is a breeze in the pasture, and they are all hanging out in the shade.  It’s better than in the barnyard.  Some of the cows seem to be rather muddy.

They’ve found a way to keep themselves cool.  Or at least a little cooler.  If Green 25 was smart, she’d go down there to cool off too, but she is quite clean.

The bull seemed to think dozing the day away on the mud bank would be the best way to deal with the heat.

I did try to help them out by adding several tubs of water, so more of them could drink before the well/cattle tank couldn’t keep up.

Green 25 seems to appreciate it.  I hope they can hang in there.

Friday’s Hunt v4.11

15 Sep

Welcome back to Friday’s Hunt. I want to thank everyone who joined in last week. I had a lot of fun visiting everyone who linked up. It’s very simple. Anyone can participate. The link opens at 7pm Central time and will close Sunday at 7pm, so you have plenty of time to enter. Hopefully, you’ll be inspired to visit some of the other entries.

We are working on round four! It’s hard to believe. I did make a slight change. It will still go through the alphabet for the first prompt, but there are two other prompts that will change each week. As always, you can choose to do one or all. If you enjoy the week’s favorite, by all means continue to add that. If you didn’t participate this week but would like to next week the topics will be: Starts with L, landscape, and key. I will always keep a list of the items for the coming week in my sidebar at the top. I am crazy busy with work off the farm and everything on the farm right now, but I will make sure to visit all participants. Without further ado, here’s my interpretations for the week.

Starts with K: I think 2J80 is the King of the Back Forty right now.  He’s certainly big and buff and impressive.

Black Angus Bull: 2J80

Stinky:  If 2J80 is king of the Back Forty, my stinky Fionn is king of the barnyard.  He does stink…

Fionn

Old:  I have an old goat herd.  After losing my final original Saanen girl, that makes Lily my old goat at age 11 1/2.  She was the first bottle kid born and raised on my farm.

Lily Osboer

Below is three generations.  Lily in the back, her daughter Dolly Ann Street in front.  In between are Dolly’s girls Sidney (right) and LilyAnn (left) Osboer.

Now it’s your turn!
