First Fresheners

23 Sep

As I start thinking about next year’s kidding, I have quite a few girls who will have kids for the first time.  The two-year-olds are:

My only true yearling to be a first freshener will be Perdita.

She’ll wait until June, so that will give her a bit more time to grow.

The Goats in Pasture

13 Aug

We did have some nice weather over the weekend. I took advantage of it to walk out and spend some time with the goats.  I tried to take a nice three-generation picture, but nobody was cooperating.

Sunshine, Tansy, and Cupid

At least Cupid’s boy, Pongo, knows how to pose for a picture.

At first, I thought this was Hera flirting with Freddie.  Then I realized it was Popcorn.  You can certainly see the difference in how a buck and a wether looks with this picture.

Cutie is my most Saanen girl (7/8), and she always has beautiful girls, but they are wild.  Seriously.  I find that truly annoying.

Ava is the same age as Cutie, and she is also a high percentage dairy.  Of course, I kept her only sweet kid–Freddie.  Hopefully, I’ll get a sweet girl from her too.  I think I’ll try getting a dairy (probably Nubian) buck next year to get the next generation milking girls in 2023.

Here’s 2TC just for fun.

Chiffon is really looking little with her two boys.  Can you imagine if I’d let her try to raise all three?  I certainly might need to think about weaning.  Soon…

I am going to try to enjoy as many of these summer days as I can before I go back to teaching soon.

Taking Inventory

11 Aug

With the goats going out on the back half of the Back Forty, I need to make sure I take inventory every evening (and pay attention all day) to make sure nobody is stuck in that back fence.  It’s not easy to keep track.

I have thirty  kids who were born over spring break.  But six of them are weaned up north with Maisie.

And Gilbert is with the bucks on the front pasture.

That  means I have twenty-three spring break kids to keep track of.

I also have eleven June kids to count.

Pretzel got separated and was looking for everyone else

But it’s getting hard.  Some of the spring break kids are tiny Xerxes babies who are almost as small as the June babies. And some of the June kids are getting big.

Some are also big.  They are as big as my yearling girls.

Tippy (also a Xerxes baby)

Then they don’t always hang out with their maa or siblings.

Zinnia and Ivy but Jack is nowhere to be seen

And Cutie is always off by herself with her two girls, so I tend not to find them to count.

I swear to you, from a distance I can never tell if I’m seeing Rajah or 2TC.

2TC has another patch on the back end.

It is definitely a challenge.
