Dolly and Victoria

31 Dec

After the goats had a chance to calm down and while it was really warm on Thursday, I decided it was time to bring Dolly and Victoria out of the garage.

Dolly

Victoria (still not at the weight I would like)

Turns out that Victoria was in heat, so she just decided to hang out by Xerxes and Antigone.

Most of the goats were not too bad about wanting to fight with them.  But they did start fighting with each other again, but not as bad as the day before.  Popcorn was about the worst.  Brat.

I managed to distract everyone with some hay, and they settled back down.  Dolly and Victoria decided it was safer to stay on the other side of the barnyard, and I did give them hay over there.

Dolly and Victoria are happily back with the herd.

Hopefully, the weather holds and I can keep feeding Victoria extra and they won’t have to go back in the garage.

Warm Weather Means Barnyard Brawls!

30 Dec

Wednesday was warm.  It started warm and got warmer as the day went on.

This sunshine brought warmth and melting

After a blizzard, and another snow shower and ridiculous cold for a week or so, the warm weather had the goats ready to get out of the barn.

But they had nothing to do out there, so that meant they decided to fight.

Seriously.

Hilda and Athena

Aphrodite and Pluto

I kept trying to separate them.  Finally, I decided to feed them a bit early to try to distract them.  It did help, but there was still a lot of brawling.

There were some minor injuries.  Trace had a bleeding horn.  I had to rescue several goats because Athena was being brutal.  Someone went after Wanda. I didn’t see who, but I did see her going through a big snow drift. Later, she was limping a bit.

That means I was not about to throw Victoria and Dolly into that mess.

Hopefully, I can let them out soon.  I really want to have a break from goats in the garage, and they would be happier back with their kids.

It’s Warm!

29 Dec

Tuesday say average temperatures for this time of year.  We got just about to the freezing point for our high, so I decided to kick the three little girls out of the garage.

Pretzel

Ostara

Heidi

They seemed to enjoy the fresh air and being back with the herd, but I’m pretty sure they all three liked eating where there were fewer goats.

Don’t worry, the next day, I let them back in to get some sweet feed in the milk room.  I’ll try to keep doing that.

Ostara was happy to be back with her mom.

I thought about letting Dolly and Victoria out the next day when we were supposed to be all the way up to 40°F.

But that didn’t work out…
