Winter Worries

13 Jan

Winter always brings worries for my critters.  This one is no different.

Aurora and goats in the barn

The crazy weather of the last two or three weeks seems to be taking its toll on some of the herd. My poor Litha’s arthritis is acting up, and she had no desire to push her way to eat.  I put her in the Love Shack.

Blaze has quit being assertive for food, and she has dropped quite a bit of weight in the last couple of weeks.  2TC stayed with her mom, so she was getting thin too.  I added them to the Love Shack with Litha, and they are getting a ridiculous amount of food.  Of course, I had to move them out when I shut does in to be sold and then moved goats in there for breeding.

Victoria has dropped a bit of weight, but her girl Ruby was really getting thin.

I’m not sure why, but I’m guessing copper might have something to do with it. She was supposed to be sold before this.  I did get her a copper capsule with the last round, and I’m trying to make sure she is eating well.

For some reason, Cinnamon is also dropping weight.  I’m going to again guess copper is part of the problem.  I’ve started letting her back in to eat sweet feed.

Astra and Antigone were always outside even in the cold and snow.

On top of that, Antigone refused to wean her girls.  I put Astra and Antigone in with Xerxes.  I swear Astra looks awesome, and Antigone is picking up weight.

Antigone and an unhappy Edith (weaning is hard) before she left the farm

I also have several girls who will be kidding for the first time.  They are younger and not as assertive, so I’m also making sure I put out lots and lots of hay so that they have enough to support themselves and their babies.

Bubbles  (Athena following her and Ruby in the back)

My older moms need a lot to support them and their babies, too.

It would help if I didn’t have some fatsos who hog all the food.

Moose (note he’s unlatched the door again)

I’ve put out a new salt/mineral block for everyone.

Cupid, Tansy, and Aphrodite

Although, Cinnamon seems to think it is better suited to keep her feet out of the snow.

My tank is staying thawed.  And if Edith is tall enough to drink from it, anyone is tall enough to drink from it.  As long as I keep it really full.

I think I’m hoping for a short winter.  (Obviously, this post was rescheduled since it still has some of the girls I sold in it.  I’m still babying my old ones; everyone is still hanging in there.)

Winter on a farm ‘in the north’ looks hard. You are one strong woman.

Not too bad most times, but I’m on the edge of a blizzard tonight.
