Heat Advisory

30 Jun

Welll, we’ve had pretty decent temperatures this summer, but we are now in excessive heat.

Our feels-like temperatures are well over 100°F (37.78°C).  That is really hard for the animals.

Victoria

I spend most of my day checking everyone and making sure they have clean water.

Cookie’s girls: Chiffon and Marge

For the most part, everyone was doing well.  My usual few goats stay up in the barnyard.  I think they might have just figured out that they’re going to get some sweet feed.

Penelope

The llama girls were doing well.  They were feeling cranky enough to keep spitting.

Tony is one that had me worried.  He was open mouth breathing.  I tried bribing him to come into the garage.

I could have had all of the goats in there with me.  They have no problems walking through an open door when you show them that there’s food on the other side of it.  Tony.  I had to halter, and he still wouldn’t let me lead him through.  I was skidding in his poop pile that he had to make right in the doorway.  During all this struggle, he wasn’t acting too stressed, so I left him.  Then I saw him out in the sun trying to eat.  I suggested eating under a shade tree, but he’s a dude.  Then he was back inside panting again.  Once again, I tried bribing him, and this time, I got him to come into the garage!

It’s cooler and he has cool concrete to lie on and a cool bucket of water, and I even turned the air conditioner on.  It’s still set to 80º F (26.67ºC), but it is better than outside.

The birds are the other animals that don’t like the heat.   The geese are fine.

The chickens don’t tolerate the heat well though.

I was glad that I remembered I had frozen a bag of tomatoes at the end of the garden season when I was sick of canning.  Guess who enjoyed a nice frozen treat. It didn’t take long for them to figure out they were nice and cold.

I also moved Mama Phoenix outside after the sun was on the other side of the barn.  This let her have a bit of breeze.

Hopefully, we can get back to more normal temperatures soon.

Sky

Until then, Sky says he’ll be lounging in the air conditioning.

We just had a little front pass by and drop temperatures. It’s still supposed to be hot tomorrow, but for now, it’s much better.
