Baby Birds in the Barn

31 May

I was walking through the barn when I heard babies.  I love the little barn swallows!

I started looking to see which nest they might be in.  But I didn’t see them.  I listened and tried following the sound.

Soon I was face to face with Myson.

He really wondered what I was looking at when I was ducked beneath his chin to take pictures.  Do you see?

The nest is just in the corner.

I’ve never seen barn swallows lay their eggs down low like this.  I’m guessing it’s because we are so dry.  They can’t find mud to make their nests in the rafters.

If my goslings have a slim chance of making it to adulthood, I’m afraid these little ones will have an even tougher time.  I never saw an adult dive-bombing Myson or me when we were near.  This afternoon when I went through to check Joani, I could still hear them behind Myson again, but no parent was around.  Poor things.

I hope you’ll join me for Friday’s Hunt this week.  I have the items listed at the top of my sidebar.

Mowing Rye

30 May

My nephew came today to mow the rye where we will plant pumpkins.  The rye will be left there, and the pumpkins will be planted in those narrow empty rows.

When you let the rye get this tall, it tends to get tangled in the discbine, but we wanted to make sure it was fully headed out, so it doesn’t grow back.

I love this scene.  It means progress towards the pumpkin patch this fall!

While I was out there, I also noticed how tall the grass is in the buffer strip.

There’s a lot of clover mixed in.

He says, “I never complain. I never ask: “Why?”

And the alfalfa is starting to bloom.

It kind of looks like we should be making hay.  There’s always more to do on a farm than there are hours and days to get it done.

Today’s post is brought to you my my hard-working farming nephew, Song-ography, and Jason Aldean’s Amarillo Sky.  I’m also sharing with Mosaic Monday and Ruby Tuesday.

I do hope you’ll consider coming back to join me for Friday’s Hunt this week.  The items for this week’s hunt are listed at the top of my sidebar.

Goats and Goslings

29 May

Last night Vixen didn’t want to go back out to pasture.  She was trying to rest in the Love Shack, but the geese on nests tried biting at her when she was trying to get comfortable.  So I put a panel across keeping her safe from the geese.  Bud also decided he didn’t want to go out to pasture.  He hurt his back leg and I think the meds the vet gave him were wearing off.  I gave him another dose of pain killer/anti-inflammatory medicine, but he was flopped out (on top of a goose nest) acting like he was dying.  The other goose on her nest thought he was a bit melodramatic.

Bud was feeling better again this morning, and he went out to pasture.  I do still have Vixen shut in.  I’m not sure when she’s due, but her udder is big enough she’s rubbing it raw (the little pink triangle).  I figure she can rest and eat hay in the Love Shack until she kids.

When I went to go get her some hay, I opened the door and saw this.

When I came back to show my mom, there was another gosling!

Aren’t they cute! I love how they are snuggled together!  With so many eggs left under her, who knows how many she’ll end up with.

Hopefully, someone will be able to actually raise one or two.

Finally, here’s random picture of my goofy Fionn.

He had been trying to head butt a fence post when I said his name.

I do hope you’ll consider coming back to join me for Friday’s Hunt next week.  The items are at the top of my sidebar.
