All spring and summer there are a couple of birds I’ve heard and wanted to photograph. They have not been cooperative. The woodpecker hasn’t been all that hard to spot when I don’t have my camera, but as soon as I get the camera out, he’s gone. Well, today, I caught him/her!
They’re not great shots, but I still managed to get them.
The second one, I hear but never see. I’ll get an occasional glimpse of feathers, and we dance around the apple tree with always just enough branches to keep me from taking a picture. But the other day, I was successful!
Again, they’re not the best, but I got my photos of the catbird.

You got him good too! LOVE the vibrant red on his head! Great shots!
They do stand out!
how awesome! i’ve never seen a catbird in person! congrats!
This is the second year they’ve been in my apple tree, and they are experts are alluding me.
I still haven’t seen a catbird here. Yes, soon as they smell your sweat on the camera, they hide. Nice shots you got! You are getting sneaky! 😉
It was more lucky than sneaky, but I’m glad I got to photograph them.
Nice! Red-Headed Woodpeckers and Catbirds are very shy, so congrats on your shots! We have catbirds in abundance here, but it is very hard to get a good picture of them. Again, congratulations!
Thanks! I was pretty happy it just sat there for me.
Love that red head!
They are great! I always love that flash of color flying by.
Love it! I know when I’m old, the kids will find me wondering around looking for birds.
Before I started blogging, I never really paid attention to birds, but now I’m always listening and looking for new ones.
Good work, Teresa! Patience does pay!
Well, it might have been luck more than anything else, but I’ll take it!
Well done you managed to photograph both birds.
It had to happen eventually, since they live in those trees.
Both are great birds, I love the Redheaded Woodpecker. Have a happy Sunday!
Thanks, Eileen! I do enjoy listening to both of them when I’m working in the yard.
Ironically, the catbirds’ call SOUNDS like a cat sometimes! I love the image of it flying! Well done. And the woodpecker…I’ve not seen this species. It’s beautiful.
When Jules (my cat) showed up in the pasture, I actually thought it was a catbird at first. They really do sound like a cat.
Birds; They do tease from inside the foliage don’t they. You won the contest with the woodpecker this time.
I swear their parents teach them how to pose for the worst possible pictures. It helps that their nest is right there in the tree.
Great shots of the woodpecker & catbird. I’ve never seen one;but hear them.
They are awfully shy!
So glad you had success! They are awesome sightings!
Thanks, Marie.
I’m sure it’s quite exciting to capture birds for the first time. They are great shots.
It is. I’ve watched and listened to these all summer. Nice to finally catch them.
