My Worst Bovine Pictures Ever

5 Dec

There’s two stories here today.  First, I really miss my camera.  The D40 doesn’t have the capabilities to take pictures in low light the way my D3100 does.  Also, the autofocus doesn’t work with the lens I’m using.  My eyes are bad, it’s dark, and I’m using manual focus.  That leads to the worst bovine pictures ever.

black heifer

I would remove the burrs from her face if she’d let me touch her.

We had a cold front come through and we went from 40*F in the morning to 20*F when I got home to do chores.  MJ had come in from the pasture and was enjoying the lack of wind.  That’s thanks to the tarp I hung over the north wall/door.

Maxine and Norma Jean, however, did not seem to think it was fair.

Maxine was positively bellowing to be let into the barn.  Don’t get me wrong, she has a nice cattle shed that they can go into.  It even has the nice deep bedding for MJ’s old bones.

MJ must have been talking across the fence about how I give him a nice bowl of corn and deliver hay to him, so he doesn’t have to leave the barn or walk in order to get his tummy full.

It takes two hands to hold the camera and adjust the focus and one to feed corn. I ran out of hands, so it’s a lovely shot of the night sky.

I did break down and bring an ear of corn for each of them.  Norma Jean wouldn’t take it though, so Maxine got both.

fuzzy cow face

I’m pretty sure this was not how I planned the cattle arrangement for this winter.

As a bonus, either the camera or lens is cleaned and the other has arrived in Texas.  They should be back home by the end of next week.  I’m sure we’ll all be happy for that joyous occasion!

Sharing with Friday’s Fences.

He doesn’t seem to mind not being with the girls. Just wish he’d quit teasing them with how good things are on his side of the fence. 😉

I’m afraid the old man needs the special treatment. Of course, I can’t convince the girls that being young and healthy is better.

Thanks, Karen. I think I’m lucky that they are in my life.

i love cow noses … so cute. i remember as a kid going with my Mom who her family has lots of farmers & getting licked by a cow. it was the weirdest thing yet for me. considering i have only seen farm animals from afar. ( :

I especially love MJ’s nose. It looks like he’s got a milk mustache. Those tongues are rough!

If only they understood. I’m glad MJ decided to come into the barn where it’s comfy for him. He deserves the pampering.

    • Teresa December 5, 2013 at 3:46 pm #

He was in there every evening during our last cold snap too. My poor old man. 🙂

MJ is a sweetie! he deserves to be comfy! Cute shots!

    • Teresa December 5, 2013 at 6:51 pm #

He really does deserve to be pampered in his old age. Wish his nice soft bed were in this barn though.

It’s just good to see all three of them again.

    • Teresa December 5, 2013 at 6:51 pm #

      It really is! 🙂

I do love the cow photos. So peaceful and cute. I guess nature is the one thing we can count on. cheers Nora.

      Yes, that is certainly true!

Not looking forward to it but looks like the cold front is headed my way.

    • Teresa December 5, 2013 at 9:41 pm #

It was quite a shock! Hope you all manage to stay warm.

Great post and AWESOME photos! I cows get seeds from the burdock in their fur, especially the tuft of hair on their head and their tails.

Thanks. You are too kind. Hopefully, Norma Jean settles down some; after all she’s only been back home for a short time. Then I can help her with those grooming needs.

I am looking at those blue eyes…winter is hard on the livestock too! Your take good care of your animals!

    • Teresa December 6, 2013 at 8:15 am #

I try to give them the best care possible. Despite their hollering at me, they have plenty of food!

  12. Pondside December 6, 2013 at 8:20 am #

You’re got your hands full. I guess the girls don’t really care that your old fellow needs some tender care – they just want that corn too!

    • Teresa December 6, 2013 at 8:30 am #

Maxine really does miss MJ. She’s called to him several times, and they do spend time just on opposite sides of the fence, but that food is pretty good too when it’s delivered right to you.

Awww! I feel your camera-less pain, Teresa. And I thought the photos were a hoot and I can see that Maxine is suffering separation anxiety…though corn does seem to soothe her. 🙂 Hope you have a beautiful weekend. The temps are supposed to plummet here again…trying to brace myself.

    • Teresa December 6, 2013 at 10:09 am #

Thanks. I’m sure Maxine will survive, but I knot it’s hard on her to be separated from MJ. They’ve been together for a lot of years. He just needs the extra care now.

  14. Gattina December 6, 2013 at 11:12 am #

Not quiet like your usual pictures, but on the other hand you have modern cows with lazer eyes, that’s also something special !

    • Teresa December 6, 2013 at 11:59 am #

Hahaha! I suppose I could call it creativity and modern bovine art.

  15. LaVoice December 6, 2013 at 1:23 pm #

Very good shots regardless of your camera issues.

    • Teresa December 6, 2013 at 1:33 pm #

Thanks. You are way too kind.

D40 or not, still better to have than none at all. I enjoyed the pics today!

    • Teresa December 7, 2013 at 10:51 am #

I agree with that, but I do miss my “good” camera.
