The End of Summer Flowers

31 Aug

I have a few flowers blooming despite the heat and lack of rain.

The speedwell seems to be quite popular with the bees.

The hibiscus is blooming for only the second time since I planted it there.  Well, I bought it before I had a place to plant it, so I just put it there.  With the yard not being mown in almost two months, it’s had the chance to grow and bloom!

Geraniums are a favorite flower, blooming all summer.  I was delighted to see the hummingbird liked it too.

Now if only I didn’t have the fun texture called “cat nose prints”, you might be able to see it better.

I’m sharing this with Weekly Top Shot.

1.  I sometimes plant things in my garden that I don’t get around to using.  At least with the parsley (and I still want to use some for making salsa), I know the swallowtail caterpillars will enjoy what I don’t use.  They also might enjoy the drink of water that they get while I’m watering the plants.

2.  We’ve had early outs from work all week because of the heat.  It really makes it hard to get into a routine when the schedule is funky everyday.  I’ve had a couple of people ask how it’s going with my involuntary transfer, and I don’t like to talk about work too much here, but I’m just going to say, I’ll be heavily promoting my novels, so I can make the best-seller’s list and write and farm full time.  I’m still hoping for a September publishing date for The Elements.

3.  I’m really excited to get the two goat kids, Little Bit and Cora, moved out of my kitchen this weekend.  Not sure how it’s going to go because I really need to keep them away from their mom.  I think I need a couple more weaning pens.

4.  I’m working on my 2014 Eden Hills calendar.  I love taking the time to go through the last year in pictures.

5.  Even though my freezers aren’t full, I’ve indulged in making some goat’s milk yogurt.  It is just divine!

The last month here has been a bit difficult with worms and MJ and the heat.  I have to remind myself that I have much to be grateful for.

Even though the heat has been so hard this week, everyone is hanging in there.  I do still have two of Kizzy’s triplets in the house, but it’s more to keep them away from her than their own health now.  I am looking forward to them going back outside over the weekend.

Little Bit

I did have to bring Clover inside yesterday, but after three hours of air conditioning and some IV fluids given sub-q, she went back outside and is doing much better.

There’s not much fun going on outside right now, but some goats always have goatitude!

We have another day of nearly a hundred degrees, and then it will start to cool down a bit over the weekend and back to more normal temperatures next week.  Sadly my area is right on the edge between moderate and severe drought conditions.
