Cute Calf

6 Jun

Even though I’ve been very focused on the goats lately, I haven’t forgotten my other animals.  Just the other day, I hiked out to the top of the big hill in the Back Forty just to see my cute calf, Norma Jean.

She was being naughty eating the big round bales.

Don’t worry, it wasn’t just her.  Maxine and MJ were snacking also.  I’d guess they were being a bad influence on her.  I warned them it was that much less they’d have to eat this winter when they didn’t have a nice lush pasture either.

As soon as I got closer, Norma Jean hid behind her mom.

Even though we helped her to nurse for the first few days of her life, she is now afraid of humans. 😦  She just hides and stares or runs away from me.

Maybe when she wants to try a taste of corn this fall, she’ll decide I’m not so bad.  Before I made her even more fearful, I turned and walked back towards the house.  It didn’t take them long to ignore my warning of a lean winter and go back to snacking on the bale.

Luckily, my nephew came and took the bales out the next day.  Now they won’t have to starve this winter.

I just love that first picture! She’s beautiful…and growing so big!

    • Teresa June 6, 2012 at 3:18 pm #

She is really a nice looking heifer. Maxine is an incredible mom!

  2. TexWisGirl June 6, 2012 at 3:11 pm #

such lazy butts! i love norma jean’s rich color.

    • Teresa June 6, 2012 at 3:18 pm #

That was my thought~too lazy to graze. 🙂

  3. Erika June 6, 2012 at 3:57 pm #

I wondered why they shouldn’t eat the hay. I met a well-seasoned lady today that talked about her penchant for walking around barefoot and how you could take the girl out of the country but not the country out of the girl. I bet she would have known right away why they needed to leave those bales alone.

    • Teresa June 6, 2012 at 5:40 pm #

It is certainly a way of life that is completely unique. That’s their winter food. 🙂

  4. abraalani June 6, 2012 at 3:59 pm #

She has such pretty markings! Are those a calf thing, or will she have those her whole life?

    • Teresa June 6, 2012 at 5:40 pm #

She is actually a solid black, but she’s sun bleached right now. 🙂

  5. Texan June 6, 2012 at 4:08 pm #

Norma Jean is so pretty, she also looks very determined in that first photo LOL.

    • Teresa June 6, 2012 at 5:41 pm #

She does have attitude and a mind of her own. 🙂

  6. Bev June 6, 2012 at 4:13 pm #

Norma Jean is lovely! And look how shiny and sleek MJ is (from what I can see of him behind that bale). Happy bovines!!!

    • Teresa June 6, 2012 at 5:41 pm #

They are happy and fat and spoiled!

  7. vbr June 6, 2012 at 4:41 pm #

That is a beautiful calf, and I love her name. What a life you must lead. It is like a dream come true!

    • Teresa June 6, 2012 at 5:42 pm #

Like all lifestyles, it comes with the good and bad. I wouldn’t trade it for the world though.

  8. Gone Country June 6, 2012 at 4:49 pm #

What a beautiful calf! It’s a shame she’s afraid of you now. Hopefully, she’ll come around.

    • Teresa June 6, 2012 at 5:42 pm #

When they grow up in the pasture without constant contact, it’s hard to make them tame. I do hope she’ll at least calm down once I spend more time out there with the end of the kidding season.

  9. Rocky Mountain Woman June 6, 2012 at 5:21 pm #

    absolutely love her name…

    • Teresa June 6, 2012 at 5:44 pm #

She was named in honor of my ex-brother-in-law, Norman, for all the help he gave us when she needed help nursing.

  10. Pat June 6, 2012 at 7:10 pm #

She is really a beautiful calf!

    • Teresa June 6, 2012 at 7:11 pm #

Maxine usually has a nice looking calf. I will miss having them.

  11. ellen b. June 6, 2012 at 7:27 pm #

Too funny. Norma Jean does have a look of concern in her eyes…

    • Teresa June 6, 2012 at 8:16 pm #

She certainly gets nervous around people.

  12. Raw Thoughts And Feelings June 6, 2012 at 7:32 pm #

Norma Jean is sure cute with her beautiful make-up eyes! And for some reasons, I like the look of the hay bail!

    • Teresa June 6, 2012 at 8:16 pm #

I like the bales too, but I like them without the hole where the cow’s face has been.

  13. Debbie June 6, 2012 at 7:39 pm #

I love to look at cows. My sister the farm wife raises them, and I love to sit on her back deck and look out at the pasture behind her. There is something so calming about them to me. I loved this post. The size of the bale makes me feel they will eat very well this winter.

    • Teresa June 6, 2012 at 8:17 pm #

They are wonderful to watch. They are really peaceful animals.

  14. Roan June 6, 2012 at 9:03 pm #

    • Teresa June 7, 2012 at 7:56 am #

They don’t seem to believe my threat of a lean winter. 😉 They know me too well.

  16. Gail June 6, 2012 at 10:32 pm #

I love Norma Jean’s deep, rich color, especially the dark around the eyes. Cute name, too. 🙂 Beautiful photos.

Thanks. She’s really solid black, but she’s sun bleached right now.

Oh Norma Jean is beautiful. I love the photos. I cannot believe you have your hay baled already we have yet to start but when we do it will be very very busy. Awesome shots Teresa

    • Teresa June 7, 2012 at 8:21 am #

This year without winter means everything is early, so we’ve already completed the first cutting. Hopefully, we’ll get some rain so we can get two more good cuttings.

  25. Lori June 7, 2012 at 8:48 am #

love norma jean she is adorable!

    • Teresa June 7, 2012 at 9:04 am #

I think so too! I might be prejudiced, but I think Maxine has great calves.

  26. Nancy June 7, 2012 at 8:50 am #

If there was a beauty contest for calves, I know Norma Jean would win, hands down. She’s gorgeous — the little rascal!

    • Teresa June 7, 2012 at 9:04 am #

Thanks. They all three are a bit spoiled. 🙂

  27. Judie McEwen June 7, 2012 at 8:54 am #

Awww, Mom! They were just having a little taste!!

    • Teresa June 7, 2012 at 9:04 am #

A little taste for the cattle could end up being a lot of hay! 😉

  28. egwow June 7, 2012 at 9:26 am #

Norma Jean is indeed a cutie! It makes me wonder why Norma Jean and her elders would want to eat dry hay when yummy green grass is right at their feet! ;))

    • Teresa June 7, 2012 at 10:53 am #

Who knows! I think they would prefer the grass too.

  29. Jeanna June 7, 2012 at 9:42 am #

I LOVE your blog. One of the reasons I recently switched my WI blog from WP was cuz of the comments section.
We had Cows on the Concourse last weekend and it’s so nice to see them without stopping on the road to take their photo. The farmer’s are like, “You’re how old and taking pictures of cows?”
So cute, eating hay bales, eh? Did you see the Farm Art pics I put up a few Wednesdays ago? Amazing things farmers did with hay bales, silos, even silage bags, lol.

    • Teresa June 7, 2012 at 10:54 am #

I don’t think you’re ever too old to take pictures of cows!

  30. Lisa @ Two Bears Farm June 7, 2012 at 10:23 am #

I hope the corn has redeeming powers!!

    • Teresa June 7, 2012 at 10:55 am #

I do too. It’s so fun to see them get past the nerves to come take corn from your hands.

  31. Gattina June 7, 2012 at 10:33 am #

She looks so sweet ! I could never eat veal again ! Fortunately I am not a big meat fan !

    • Teresa June 7, 2012 at 10:56 am #

My MJ is one of the main reasons I quit eating meat. 🙂
