Even though I’ve been very focused on the goats lately, I haven’t forgotten my other animals. Just the other day, I hiked out to the top of the big hill in the Back Forty just to see my cute calf, Norma Jean.
She was being naughty eating the big round bales.
Don’t worry, it wasn’t just her. Maxine and MJ were snacking also. I’d guess they were being a bad influence on her. I warned them it was that much less they’d have to eat this winter when they didn’t have a nice lush pasture either.
As soon as I got closer, Norma Jean hid behind her mom.
Even though we helped her to nurse for the first few days of her life, she is now afraid of humans. 😦 She just hides and stares or runs away from me.
Maybe when she wants to try a taste of corn this fall, she’ll decide I’m not so bad. Before I made her even more fearful, I turned and walked back towards the house. It didn’t take them long to ignore my warning of a lean winter and go back to snacking on the bale.
Luckily, my nephew came and took the bales out the next day. Now they won’t have to starve this winter.

I just love that first picture! She’s beautiful…and growing so big!
She is really a nice looking heifer. Maxine is an incredible mom!
such lazy butts! i love norma jean’s rich color.
That was my thought~too lazy to graze. 🙂
I wondered why they shouldn’t eat the hay. I met a well-seasoned lady today that talked about her penchant for walking around barefoot and how you could take the girl out of the country but not the country out of the girl. I bet she would have known right away why they needed to leave those bales alone.
It is certainly a way of life that is completely unique. That’s their winter food. 🙂
She has such pretty markings! Are those a calf thing, or will she have those her whole life?
She is actually a solid black, but she’s sun bleached right now. 🙂
Norma Jean is so pretty, she also looks very determined in that first photo LOL.
She does have attitude and a mind of her own. 🙂
Norma Jean is lovely! And look how shiny and sleek MJ is (from what I can see of him behind that bale). Happy bovines!!!
They are happy and fat and spoiled!
That is a beautiful calf, and I love her name. What a life you must lead. It is like a dream come true!
Like all lifestyles, it comes with the good and bad. I wouldn’t trade it for the world though.
What a beautiful calf! It’s a shame she’s afraid of you now. Hopefully, she’ll come around.
When they grow up in the pasture without constant contact, it’s hard to make them tame. I do hope she’ll at least calm down once I spend more time out there with the end of the kidding season.
absolutely love her name…
She was named in honor of my ex-brother-in-law, Norman, for all the help he gave us when she needed help nursing.
She is really a beautiful calf!
Maxine usually has a nice looking calf. I will miss having them.
Too funny. Norma Jean does have a look of concern in her eyes…
She certainly gets nervous around people.
Norma Jean is sure cute with her beautiful make-up eyes! And for some reasons, I like the look of the hay bail!
I like the bales too, but I like them without the hole where the cow’s face has been.
I love to look at cows. My sister the farm wife raises them, and I love to sit on her back deck and look out at the pasture behind her. There is something so calming about them to me. I loved this post. The size of the bale makes me feel they will eat very well this winter.
They are wonderful to watch. They are really peaceful animals.
Norma Jean sure has a gorgeous color coat. Very nice series of shots.
Thanks. She is a pretty girl. 🙂
Oh my goodness! You have such a fun farm! I L O V E your animals! est of luck with that lean winter food fare! Ha Ha! Enjoy your week
They don’t seem to believe my threat of a lean winter. 😉 They know me too well.
I love Norma Jean’s deep, rich color, especially the dark around the eyes. Cute name, too. 🙂 Beautiful photos.
Thanks. She’s really solid black, but she’s sun bleached right now.
Norma Jean is a very cute calf!
Thanks! I think so.
Look at those beautiful eyes and coat. She is a keeper. Don’t eat her!
I don’t eat any of my animals, but I doubt I keep her.
what a lovely post…i love those pictures too.
Thanks. I do love my cows!
Nice calf. Like the way you caught the light in its eyes.
SM
Thanks. I love my evening walks just because of the great lighting at that time of day.
Enjoyed my visit. Top photo is my fav♫
Thanks. She is very photogenic when she’s not running from me. 🙂
I love your bovine. They are so beautiful 😀
Thanks. I do love the cattle for their gentle nature.
Great pictures you show – beautiful animals. Hanne Bente
Thanks. I do love my cattle, and they are quite happy out in the Back Forty.
Oh Norma Jean is beautiful. I love the photos. I cannot believe you have your hay baled already we have yet to start but when we do it will be very very busy. Awesome shots Teresa
This year without winter means everything is early, so we’ve already completed the first cutting. Hopefully, we’ll get some rain so we can get two more good cuttings.
love norma jean she is adorable!
I think so too! I might be prejudiced, but I think Maxine has great calves.
If there was a beauty contest for calves, I know Norma Jean would win, hands down. She’s gorgeous — the little rascal!
Thanks. They all three are a bit spoiled. 🙂
Awww, Mom! They were just having a little taste!!
A little taste for the cattle could end up being a lot of hay! 😉
Norma Jean is indeed a cutie! It makes me wonder why Norma Jean and her elders would want to eat dry hay when yummy green grass is right at their feet! ;))
Who knows! I think they would prefer the grass too.
I LOVE your blog. One of the reasons I recently switched my WI blog from WP was cuz of the comments section.
We had Cows on the Concourse last weekend and it’s so nice to see them without stopping on the road to take their photo. The farmer’s are like, “You’re how old and taking pictures of cows?”
So cute, eating hay bales, eh? Did you see the Farm Art pics I put up a few Wednesdays ago? Amazing things farmers did with hay bales, silos, even silage bags, lol.
I don’t think you’re ever too old to take pictures of cows!
I hope the corn has redeeming powers!!
I do too. It’s so fun to see them get past the nerves to come take corn from your hands.
She looks so sweet ! I could never eat veal again ! Fortunately I am not a big meat fan !
My MJ is one of the main reasons I quit eating meat. 🙂
Norma Jean is so cute! I love her sultry eyes!
Sneaky cows : )
I love their big soft brown eyes too!
I love that you have named your calf, Norma Jean. What a pretty little calf and such a rich, rich color
All of my mammals have names. 🙂 Her mom is Maxine, and the big black ox is her Uncle MJ.
Wow! Amazing shots and she is just beautiful ~thanks, (A Creative Harbor)
Thank you! That frozen stiff with fear works for posing. 🙂
Awwww…she is sooo cute! Love the picture of her peeking around her mom! 🙂
She’ll decide humans are okay after all once you show her the corn this fall!
They usually do. 🙂 Food is a great friend maker.
She’s a pretty calf! I love their eyes and her’s are so pretty with the black around them! Sweet C post. Visiting from Mrs. Jenny’s class!
She does have those darker circles right now with the rest of her being sun bleached.
What a big girl she’s getting to be!
It really is amazing how fast they grow up!
She is a beautiful calf!
Love that first ‘portrait’!
She really is nice looking. Maxine is a great mother, so she has nice healthy calves.
I am in love with your blog! I am following you now! Thanks for the visit over at a Geek In Glasses. I have sheep, goats and some chickens too. Your pictures are beautiful! I’m glad you found me, so I could find you.
Glad you stopped back by. I love meeting fellow farm bloggers!
oh but that naughty baby is just so cute!
Thanks!
Why are animals so darn cute when they’re little?
=)
They are all adorable as babies, aren’t they! I guess it’s so when they grow up you’re so attached you wouldn’t think of getting rid of them. 🙂
that Norma Jean is quite a cutie!!
Thanks. I think so too.
Thank you for sharing at RT this week, Teresa. 😉
Thanks for hosting! I love Rural Thursday!
She is o beautiful and shy :). This photos made be even more vegetarian than I already am :). Kisses.
I can’t deny my relationship with MJ was one of the big reasons I became a vegetarian. 🙂
Norma Jean is such a good cow name, I love it!
Thanks. She was named in honor of my ex-brother-in-law Norman who really helped while she was struggling to nurse her mom. 🙂
Hi again!
Many thanks for stopping by.
Such an interesting post – great pics. Lovely calf!
Have a lovely weekend too!
Thanks. I do think Norma Jean is nice looking. 🙂
Ahhh…Ahhhh…
gosh. I thought nothing could be cuter than your goat pictures and then Norma Jean comes onto your blog.
She is really a cutie pie!
I love the expression on her face!
Thanks for the smile.
A+
Glad you enjoyed the stop. Norma Jean is awfully cute, even though she’s snooty like her mom.
Ohhhh…..num-num-num!
I have come to have an affinity for wee calves……especially the black and white ones. Those eyes….those teeth……….TOO much!!!!! xo
Too bad she’s turned wild. I would love to go hug her and rub those fuzzy ears!
Is she a lowline angus? I have a mini that looks just like her.
She is half Gelbvieh and half black Angus.
