When I moved here, I brought one cat and my ox. The ox also brought his companion cow, technically my sister’s retired cow. Her last calf came with us to finish growing up. I knew I wanted to have more animals, but I didn’t know exactly what type of animal I wanted, but I knew I wanted a lot of animals.
My son decided he really wanted ducks. That meant we were going to get ducks. I looked through the catalogues and talked to people and finally decided to order a “ducks deluxe” package. I began cleaning out a section of the barn so they would have a place to go. I had my dad help me build a wonderful cage to keep the little ones safe.
Finally, they arrived! They were even cuter and sweeter than I could have imagined. I was pretty ignorant, but we muddled through. One thing I did decide, I would never order a “deluxe” package again. I ended up with a dangerous ratio of males to females. I found someone to give most of the males to, kept the girls and two drakes. Quackers is a buff duck (above), and Chess is a Cayuga (below).
Quackers and Chess are celebrating their eleventh birthdays this month. Quackers is a little stiff when he first stands up, especially in the winter. They are still pretty darn spry for their age. Happy Birthday to Quackers and Chess!
