Calving Season

2 May

I must say that today was busy enough to give me enough blog entries to last through the whole week, Millie too.  I’ll start with our calving season.  It officially began today.  Maxine went out to the bottom, along the ditch and gave birth to a nice black bull.

I was hoping she would have her calf over the weekend because the weather has been nice.  Of course, she decides to give birth just as we have a severe thunderstorm.  I will admit, as severe thunderstorms go, this one wasn’t too bad.

After the rain quit, I went back to check on them, and he had already been up nursing.  He was chilled, but he buried his nose between Mom’s teats and got warmed up.

Maxine was pretty calm and okay with me taking pictures, but she was not too happy with Magic.  She did give him a couple of warnings, and I’m happy to say, he decided to wander another directions.  That’s good, because I had no plans of trying to protect him from her.

Any suggestions on a name?  Thunder because of the storm?  Odin, Zeus, or Thor for the same reason?  In a related note, our calving season ended today.  That happens when you have a herd of one production cow and one ox.
