The Darkest Days

We’ve reached the darkest days of the year.

The winter solstice is on December 21st, and then the sun begins its journey back to the northern hemisphere.  I am anxiously looking forward to those longer days.

Right now I feel like the cats.  I’m ready to hunker down and nap about twenty hours each day, but I don’t even have a rainbow pillow to sleep on.

It’s hard to get chores done outside.  Really, by the time I get home from work and make sure everyone is fed and watered, it’s dark.  I just want to curl up on the couch and do nothing.

I haven’t even hardly had the energy to set up photo shoots or bake.

We won’t discuss the lack of house cleaning.  Hopefully, my winter break will give me renewed energy and time to play with photography and make more soaps.

Yep, sales have been good, and I’ll be making more soap over break.  Maybe that will get my energy jump-started for the new year.

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

The items for this weeks Scavenger Hunt Sunday:  The Weather Today, R is for…, Green, Joy, and Drink.  These fit perfectly for this week’s Song-ography song, It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.

The weather today and yesterday has been white.  There’s snow on the ground and the sky is white, and we’ve even had a few flurries both days.

It’s also cold.  MJ ventured out of the barn, and I thought he might enjoy a Santa hat.  They just don’t make them in his size.

R is for Reva all snuggled in against her maa after browsing in the pasture.

After all the cold outside, I like to come in and enjoy a nice warm drink.  My favorite is hot chocolate made with goat milk.

Then I play with my camera.  I’ve started trying to find some lovely festive still lifes.  My photo assistant gets all wrapped up in the work.

Some are better than the others, but I think they all have at least a touch of green in them.

Finally, I’m filled with joy at my wonderful life and animal family here on the farm.

I do hope everyone has a joyous holiday season.

Hayfield Scavenger Hunt

The topics for this week’s scavenger hunt are:  tools, motion, sweet, dots, stripes.

I mentioned that we were going to bale hay soon.  My nephew came with his powerful tools and mowed the field on Thursday.

You can see the motion of the grass as it’s cut and comes through the back of the discbine.

On Friday, I got to admire those beautiful stripes of cut grass on the back hills.

I went for a walk that evening, and enjoyed the sweet smell of freshly cut hay.  The llama thought it made a nice soft bed.

The goats thought it made it a lot easier to walk in the pasture.

I did not enjoy the thistles that dotted the landscape, even though the goats find them delicious.

The bokeh made for a lovely dot effect in the photos though.

not an SOOC shot, but the bokeh was naturally in the picture

This morning, he came out with more handy tools and raked the hay into windrows, so we could bale it.  His motion was quick to try and get it ready to bale.

It cleared up, but there have been several more of those downpours.

Baling is now put off until Monday, and I’m mad at Mother Nature because I even asked please for dry weather to get my hay made.
