Sometimes I get a little bored in the winter months and want to try something new. I had seen some pictures on other blogs and thought I’d like to try them, just for something different. I started by doing dishes.
Why does it seem like there’s always dishes waiting by the sink when I want to use it? Anyhow, I got my speedlight and macro lens (for the record, I did switch to the 18-55mm lens part way through).
Then the hard part. I was trying to find some fabric that had a nice little print. No luck. Really, my wardrobe seems to be solids, checks and stripes. I did get creative and tried a foil pan. I used the auto focus on the running water and then I switched to manual focus. Then I slowed the water to just a drip and trickle. Interesting, but not quite what I wanted.
Then I added my external light (aka heat lamp with a soft white lightbulb covered with parchment paper) to try and get rid of some shadows. But the pan had to go. I found a shirt with a large paisley print. Better.
Still, it wasn’t quite right. Finally, I went and got my polka dot pajama bottoms, and I believe this is when I switched from the macro to the other lens. I finally got some good enough shots to bother with editing them.
Much better! The goal is to have the backdrop (pajamas) blurred and be able to see clearly the pattern reflected in the water drop. I need smaller drops of water or a larger piece of fabric.
I did have fun, but I think I need to go fabric shopping, put the dishes away to clear the counter for a better work space and try it again. Still, I had a lot of fun playing in the kitchen sink!
What do you do when you get bored?

This looks like great fun! Now I want to try it.
Jan 30, 2013 @ 15:14:27
It certain is a challenge. I really do want to try it again when I find some better fabrics.
Jan 30, 2013 @ 15:31:32
Those dishes…they multiply in the night when we aren’t looking. Of course. Who wants an audience for such things?
Jan 30, 2013 @ 16:01:07
I am convinced they are like rabbits in that regard.
Jan 30, 2013 @ 15:33:27
Hey girl, paisley hot! Great shots and you got us wanting to play. Slight problem with lenses and stuff but the idea is great.
Jan 30, 2013 @ 16:01:34
I will definitely keep playing the next time I’m bored.
Jan 30, 2013 @ 15:36:51

This is great!
When I’m bored, I pick up a book…and usually end up falling asleep! Must be a sign of getting “old”!
Jan 30, 2013 @ 16:04:38
That’s always a good choice too. Lately I seem to do more photography or writing than reading though.
Jan 30, 2013 @ 16:10:32
They are amazing especially the last one howmklever are you
Jan 30, 2013 @ 16:20:24
Thanks. I wasn’t too clever. I just stole the idea from a couple of other people.
Jan 30, 2013 @ 16:44:06

Jan 30, 2013 @ 16:49:01

Jan 30, 2013 @ 18:37:43
It’s not exactly how I wanted them to end up, but I do like these.
Jan 30, 2013 @ 19:11:56
Who knew a kitchen sink could be so much fun. Fabulous photos.
Jan 30, 2013 @ 19:14:47
Generally you can make anything fun!
Jan 30, 2013 @ 22:10:21
Wow! Maybe I’m the only one who thinks this is fantastic, magical, awesome, inventive….I could go on and on….who’d have thought about putting pj bottoms behind a faucet and taking a picture of a drip of water????? YOU. lol NOT ME!!! NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS….no matter how bored I was. I salute you, your creativeness, and your camera!!!
Jan 31, 2013 @ 06:32:21
I really am not that creative. I stole the idea from a couple of other blogs.
Jan 30, 2013 @ 22:10:49
One more thing….did you take a course in photography to know to do these things?
Jan 31, 2013 @ 06:32:56
I am still pretty tied to the automatic settings on my camera. I’d love to take a class on how to be more effective with my camera.
Jan 31, 2013 @ 01:45:48
My pictures today were taken with my little pocket Sony and they are telling of my “K” Kangaroos and a “K” Koala bear. They would go nicely on your farm.
..
Jan 31, 2013 @ 06:33:50
I do love my camera. I’m sure the lightening strike is much harder to catch. I can control the water drops.
Jan 31, 2013 @ 02:37:13
You have time to get bored?!
Jan 31, 2013 @ 06:34:17
Just occasionally. Or maybe it’s more trying to creatively avoid the stuff I ought to be doing.
Feb 02, 2013 @ 03:15:11
Now there speaks a girl after my own heart! ‘Creatively avoiding’, I could say, has been my mantra for years. And full marks for spotty pyjama thinking…
Feb 02, 2013 @ 08:32:47
I am quite good at creatively avoiding tasks.
Jan 31, 2013 @ 06:48:55
Great shots and great K post -I’ve got to try this now!
Jan 31, 2013 @ 06:50:38
Thanks. It was fun! I really do want to try for a better effect with a larger fabric.
Jan 31, 2013 @ 07:22:51

Nothing like grabbing the camera when you need to find some entertainment!
Jan 31, 2013 @ 16:20:18
Well how fun was that?!? I haven’t seen this before, thanks for ‘splainin’ it too! I still need to try the fizzy citrus thingy.
