The Kitchen Sink

Sometimes I get a little bored in the winter months and want to try something new.  I had seen some pictures on other blogs and thought I’d like to try them, just for something different.  I started by doing dishes.

Why does it seem like there’s always dishes waiting by the sink when I want to use it?  Anyhow, I got my speedlight and macro lens (for the record, I did switch to the 18-55mm lens part way through).

speedlight and lens

Then the hard part.  I was trying to find some fabric that had a nice little print.  No luck.  Really, my wardrobe seems to be solids, checks and stripes.  I did get creative and tried a foil pan.  I used the auto focus on the running water and then I switched to manual focus.  Then I slowed the water to just a drip and trickle.  Interesting, but not quite what I wanted.

Then I added my external light (aka heat lamp with a soft white lightbulb covered with parchment paper) to try and get rid of some shadows.  But the pan had to go.  I found a shirt with a large paisley print.  Better.

Still, it wasn’t quite right.  Finally, I went and got my polka dot pajama bottoms, and I believe this is when I switched from the macro to the other lens.  I finally got some good enough shots to bother with editing them.

Much better!  The goal is to have the backdrop (pajamas) blurred and be able to see clearly the pattern reflected in the water drop.  I need smaller drops of water or a larger piece of fabric.

I did have fun, but I think I need to go fabric shopping, put the dishes away to clear the counter for a better work space and try it again.  Still, I had a lot of fun playing in the kitchen sink!

What do you do when you get bored?

Those dishes…they multiply in the night when we aren’t looking. Of course. Who wants an audience for such things? :)

I am still pretty tied to the automatic settings on my camera. I’d love to take a class on how to be more effective with my camera.

:) Hi Teresa. I can see that you were having ‘camera fun’ with a very nice camera. You did very well. Catching a water drop must be about as hard as catching a lightening strike.

My pictures today were taken with my little pocket Sony and they are telling of my “K” Kangaroos and a “K” Koala bear. They would go nicely on your farm.
