Recently I’ve noticed a new advertising ploy, and it just makes me chuckle.
Do you see it? The chickens are being fed a vegetarian diet.
I’ve seen this same claim on television commercials for chicken meat. I assume they’re trying to say their chickens are not fed by-products from meat-packing plants, but it still makes me chuckle.
The only people who think chickens are herbivores are people who have never met a chicken.
Remember the horn worm tomato? The girls go crazy for bugs. They love to catch mice and fight over them. I feel sorry for toads that accidentally hop into the pen.
I’m pretty sure if I fell down in their pen, someone would come and find my bones picked clean in no time flat.

If I don’t post some day, you can guess what happened!
Jan 24, 2013 @ 18:07:21
worse than hogs!
Jan 24, 2013 @ 18:11:36
They truly are scavengers.
Jan 24, 2013 @ 18:31:25
I think one of the things that impressed my husband the most about our chickens (he had never been around them before we got them) is that they truely are scavengers. He calls them the vultures of the barnyard. They will eat small frogs and baby birds if they come across them.
Jan 24, 2013 @ 19:01:42
That’s a perfect description for them.
Jan 24, 2013 @ 22:31:08
I tried feeding my chickens potato beetles once, and they looked at me like I had two heads! I guess if I would’ve just left them roam the garden, and they’d found them by themselves, maybe they’d have eaten them? Silly birds!
Jan 25, 2013 @ 06:38:41
Mine are wild for any bug or worm or small rodent!
Jan 24, 2013 @ 22:36:46
oooo, I hope not!!!! That sounds like the poor farmer who went out to feed his hogs and didn’t return….when his family went to check on him, there were only pieces of him left. He fed his hogs, alright. Horrible!!!
Jan 25, 2013 @ 06:39:15
Well, I’m pretty quick to get up if I fall. I don’t think it will be an issue until I get a bit older.
Jan 25, 2013 @ 01:45:58
It’s laughable! We’ve seen ours fight over a snake.
Jan 25, 2013 @ 06:39:47
They are vicious!
Jan 25, 2013 @ 07:23:37
I’ve seen those commercials and they always makes me smile. Vegetarian chickens, I don’t think so! My girls go wild over tomato worms and mice too.
Jan 25, 2013 @ 07:46:50
They do love their protein.
Jan 25, 2013 @ 07:26:24
Ever throw the Thanksgiving Turkey carcass into the chicken pen? Scary.
Jan 25, 2013 @ 07:47:05
I can only imagine.
Jan 25, 2013 @ 08:27:39
As they say – you can fool some of the people all of the time! This made me smile too.
Jan 25, 2013 @ 08:33:10
The first time my son held a worm into the chicken’s building and they attacked, he was surprised. Of course, you point out that the early bird gets the worm and chickens are birds, and it starts to make more sense.
Jan 25, 2013 @ 11:16:30
I did not realize that chickens can “attack” glad I am not a bug!
or for that matter a turkey carcase! YIKES I just never know what I learn through others blog.
Jan 25, 2013 @ 11:39:37
They are truly scavengers! Blogging really does open up my world too.
Jan 25, 2013 @ 12:33:28
I love our chickens! Between them and the barn they love to keep the haystack, mice free!
Jan 25, 2013 @ 12:43:37
They really are good at catching mice. I almost feel sorry for the poor rodents.
Jan 25, 2013 @ 13:57:26
I didn’t know they were such scavengers.
Jan 25, 2013 @ 14:55:32
They are wicked scavengers with those sharp hooked beaks.
Jan 25, 2013 @ 18:43:17
Such a cute funny post… Oooo yes my chickens love their bugs, frogs, mice and anything else they can find.
Jan 25, 2013 @ 18:49:08
Thanks. They are great at keeping the rodents under control.
Jan 26, 2013 @ 04:06:07
My goodness, that’s a real joke ! I still laugh ! It becomes hysterical with this organic/bio tic !
Jan 26, 2013 @ 07:55:20
I laugh every time I see those commercials for chickens fed a vegetarian diet.
Jan 26, 2013 @ 10:44:22
Yes too funny. I had a turkey burger that was a day passed when I would eat it so I chopped it up and they devoured it in seconds. I also noticed their combs a brighter red and healthier looking this week after some animal protein.
Jan 26, 2013 @ 10:45:42
There’s no doubt that their diet naturally includes as much animal protein as they can get.
Jan 26, 2013 @ 12:03:02
I wonder if that *claim* might be to indicate the eggs have a higher omega 3 content? I know they claim grass fed beef has a higher omega 3 content. Funny, though, because unless the birds are caged they are likely pouncing on all the things you list and aren’t ‘vegetarian’ fed at all.
Jan 26, 2013 @ 13:57:30
It’s all a marketing ploy to people that don’t know about chickens. The tv commercial that says they are fed a vegetarian diet also says they are cage free. Of course, they feed them the vegetarian diet, but I’m sure those chickens are enjoying lots of other things they get on their own.
Jan 27, 2013 @ 11:27:53
Are chickens supposed to eat meat?
Jan 27, 2013 @ 14:20:26
They do naturally. If you look at their beak, it’s made for ripping flesh.
Jan 27, 2013 @ 11:28:47
Of course worms & bugs count as meat; excuse my ignorance? Duh!
