Crop Update

Over the weekend, I went for a walk in the waterways of the cornfield to check out how things were doing after our bit of rain.  The change in the waterways was amazing.

The grass and alfalfa are both growing, and I think I might even get another cutting off of them if this growth continues.

Looking down a row in the cornfield, I could see a lot of ears.

Some are big and others don’t look quite as big.

Even some of the long ears are not all filled out to the end like the one below.  Still I’m optimistic that I’ll be able to get a decent (well below normal) harvest.

While I was on my tour, I came across someone who didn’t expect me.

She was sleeping quite soundly not very far into the field.

Slowly she started to wake up.

Asking her to move her head to the left a little just didn’t work out very well.

I felt so bad for scaring her.

I’m kind of in an area that is a little oasis. The soil here is really good, and that is what is saving this area from the devastation you see within about twenty miles in any direction. It’s pure luck.

I walked right up to a calf a few years ago while it was sleeping,it’s “mother” standing over her…turns out those horns where not moms but a huge buck, scared the living life out of me,glad he decided to be nice!

That would be quite a shock! I did see a buck just south of my place earlier this week, but I haven’t seen him in my fields or pasture.

How unusual to be able to surprise a sleeping doe. What a great picture.
Glad to see the rain has saved your crops.

Poor thing! I was hoping she wasn’t sick or something, but looks like once she realized your presence she had no trouble high tailing it out of there. Great shots!!

I’m trying to remain cautiously optimistic. It’s hard to be positive in a year like this. Hope you guys are still getting the rain as it’s needed.

Deer often leave their little ones hidden in a field such as yours during the day … what a special moment to see her.

I think your crops look fantastic based on what’s going on around here…

Finding the deer snoozing was such a great thing — so cute. :)

I am amazed they look as well as they do. I don’t know how with the drought, but my nephew assures me it’s the type of soil we have here.

I do feel like I’m in a little island where the crops look better than most places. Just a few miles away, you can really see a decline in the crop quality.

You must be a stealth walker! :) That would be a good place to hide…in the corn. Think I would if I were a deer.

I’m glad the rain has helped with your crop. We’ve gotten too much rain in some places, the farmers are complaining that the potatoes are drowning. I love the photos of the doe, she’s beautiful.

It’s so hard to believe that we are dealing with one extreme while your farmers are dealing with another. I do wish we could even it out. Thanks, the doe was so beautiful sleeping there.
