I finally got one to sit still.
Actually, it’s too hot to do anything, so I stood around waiting for the silly thing to finally land.

it’s beautiful. glad he came to you.

He spent a very long time fluttering around me on the patio before he sat down. It was very interesting.

Those two “eyes” on the tail are looking right at me! There were these strange yellow and black bugs that had chomped their through my dill and parsley and grossed me out and I killed them! I googled them and when I saw them I learned they were caterpillars. I still feel bad to this day. It has been over a month already. xo

Swallowtail caterpillars LOVE parsley and dill. I feel bad that I don’t have any growing out there this year. No sense in feeling guilty from something in the past. The important thing is to learn from all those experiences. I figure by the time I become an old woman, I’ll be really smart if I learn from all those things.

Thanks, Teresa, next year I am putting a big pot of dill out there just for them. xo

I’m sure that will make them happy! They aren’t like the hornworm either. They will still leave you plenty to use.

Wow, you nailed him! Great shot. What a gift.

It really was nice when he finally sat there and was very patient for me to take a lot of pictures.
Jul 24, 2012 @ 21:30:32
What a beautiful capture!
Jul 24, 2012 @ 21:40:53
Well, once he cooperated, it was easy!
Jul 24, 2012 @ 21:50:07
Very cool! We found two caterpillars this season that turned into Swallowtails just last week. They are beautiful butterflies for sure!
Jul 24, 2012 @ 22:24:34
The swallowtails are my favorites! I’m still trying to convince the yellow one to pose for me.
Jul 24, 2012 @ 22:37:42
That is just beautiful!
Jul 24, 2012 @ 23:39:58
Thanks. They have been fluttering all around the last couple of days.

Your swallowtail is much more beautiful than mine! I think someone nibbled off his tails. We had a new visitor last evening to our garden – a Zebra Swallowtail!
Jul 25, 2012 @ 09:28:02
How lucky for the new visitor. I couldn’t believe how perfect this one was. I had another that was missing one of his little tails.
Jul 25, 2012 @ 06:04:13
great shot. (:

Thanks!

Unfortunately, it has been too hot around here for any butterflies. At least that is what I’m saying cuz I haven’t seen any. I planted flowers that would bring them in but so far not. A great picture. They are hard to catch most times. Thanks for sharing.
Jul 25, 2012 @ 09:29:10
It did take quite a bit of patience and just standing outside in the hundred degree heat waiting for it to settle down. Hopefully they will show up for you.
Jul 25, 2012 @ 08:26:08
Ohh, he’s pretty! Great capture.
Jul 25, 2012 @ 09:29:33
Thanks. I was happy to finally have one sit still for me.

Gorgeous photo and this is the second time today that the Swallowtail butterfly has come up for me. This morning my youngest son and I placed four caterpillars into his butterfly habitat to await their eventual butterfly-ness! He wondered they would be Painted Ladies or Swallowtails.
Jul 25, 2012 @ 17:47:36
How exciting for him to get to see them hatch!
Jul 25, 2012 @ 16:15:35
I’m glad you waited around for him to land, he is beautiful!!
Jul 25, 2012 @ 17:48:01
Well, it’s too hot to do anything else!
