When I went out to do my morning chores the other day, I was greeted by a very scary scene.
Not Cinnamon waiting at the gate. That’s pretty normal, and she’s not at all scary. Take a closer look.
It was a cicada.
Well, it was the exoskeleton of a cicada.
You can see where the back split to let the bug out.
Pretty scary looking monster when you see it up close!
Linking to SOOC Sunday and Macro Monday.

i love those things! the green version or the ectoskeleton. and my dogs love crunching them (gross!)
Jul 21, 2012 @ 16:09:48
That is so funny that the dogs crunch them. Icky!
Jul 21, 2012 @ 17:10:11
Oh these shots are great. And the makro is outstanding. I’ve never seen a cicada, only heard them. Fantastic!
Jul 21, 2012 @ 19:36:43
Thanks. I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen the bug~just heard them and found the exoskeletons.
Jul 21, 2012 @ 18:53:18
It’s that time of year. I’ve been told that the rains come after one sees them. Didn’t you just have some rain? Thanks for sharing.
Jul 21, 2012 @ 19:38:17
Actually, I had about ten raindrops. Maybe we need to have a whole fleet fly over to get some real rain.
Jul 21, 2012 @ 19:56:05
That goes a long way to explaining how people come up with ideas for Sci-Fi Horror shows….they just look to Mother Nature.
Jul 21, 2012 @ 20:09:55
Yep! Mother Nature can outdo human imagination any day!
Jul 21, 2012 @ 20:24:54
Oh my gosh! I have never seen one. Wouldn’t want to encounter it in person, but I love seeing the photographs! That last one is so crystal clear. Kudos!
Jul 21, 2012 @ 21:30:32
Thanks. It’s easy to capture an exoskeleton~they don’t move.
Jul 21, 2012 @ 20:40:56
I had a cat several years ago that would bring in the live ones…..into the house. Not cool. I’d take it away and throw it outside and he’d look at me like I took away his very best friend. He would just hold it in his mouth and it would be buzzing….eeby jeebiez….blah. Some of my friends (I never did) would wear the “shells” as ear rings. I’ve had a lot of experiences with “locusts” as we called them.
Jul 21, 2012 @ 21:31:37
I don’t usually see the live ones. I don’t usually find the exoskeletons that close to the house~they are usually in the pasture on the tree trunks. I’m sure I wouldn’t want the cats to bring them in. Ugh!
Jul 21, 2012 @ 21:48:23
Now there is something I really miss and that is hearing that cadence of the cicadas in the trees in the summer. Love that sound.
Jul 21, 2012 @ 22:04:36
They are getting noisy already. When I walk in the pasture at dusk, it can almost be deafening.
Jul 21, 2012 @ 23:28:46
I have never liked those little monsters. I think they are creepy looking. The bugs and the shells! But your photos are Awesome. You definitely captured detailed views of those little monsters.
Jul 22, 2012 @ 08:25:28
They do look like they come right out of a horror movie!
Jul 22, 2012 @ 04:25:30
As interesting as I find the creatures, I don’t like to be around them! Freaky looking, if you ask me! Great photos showing the detail!
Jul 22, 2012 @ 08:26:33
Thanks. They don’t bother me to hear their noise or find the exoskeleton, but I’m not sure I’d want to hang out with the living thing.
Jul 22, 2012 @ 07:06:26
We have swarms of cicadas every seventeen years. The exoskeletons are creepy-looking, but they don’t fly into your face.
Jul 22, 2012 @ 08:26:59
True. The exoskeletons are kind of interesting.
Jul 22, 2012 @ 08:08:57
I’ve never seen a live one either- just their skeletal remains clinging to the pine trees in the yard.
Jul 22, 2012 @ 08:27:24
That’s where I usually see them too. I was surprised to find this one on the fence post.
Jul 22, 2012 @ 11:56:33
well, you can be scared of them. They can destroy your hearing. I heard a lot of them in CostaRica and it gave me a headache.
But, still, your shots are great.
Jul 22, 2012 @ 12:08:52
I can’t believe how loud they are when I walk in the pasture right as the sun goes down. It really is deafening!
Jul 22, 2012 @ 13:04:16
I love finding those!
Jul 22, 2012 @ 15:46:18
When my son was little, he had the most fun collection of exoskeletons, rocks, and whatever else he could fine. Lots of fun.
Jul 23, 2012 @ 02:03:36
lol I used to gather all of em up I could find and stick em all over my clothes when I was a kid. Loved them.
Jul 23, 2012 @ 05:02:54
That is so funny! It sounds like something my son would have done.
Jul 23, 2012 @ 08:13:15
These things scare me to death…I run every time I see one!
Jul 23, 2012 @ 08:42:08
I got used to them when I had a bunch of little boys running around. They love that kind of stuff.
Jul 23, 2012 @ 11:00:05
That’s the best up close photo of cicada I have ever seen and it is pretty scary. ^_^

Jul 23, 2012 @ 11:59:53
Well, I’ll take that as a compliment. Thanks for stopping by.
Jul 23, 2012 @ 16:26:50
It is pretty scary looking! Yikes!
When I was a kid, we used to play “army” with the exoskeletons at Grandma’s during summer vacation. We would line them up in rows on the picnic table! What memories!
Jul 23, 2012 @ 17:06:10
That is funny. They would make great tanks to take into battle!
Jul 24, 2012 @ 03:34:37
Hi there – nice pictures – I’m sure there a different species, but we find these on our street trees during the summer. We take the kids out to look for them – all good fun.

That one sat there for a couple of days before it finally disappeared. I know my son was fascinated with them when he was little.
