When I was running around yesterday with the hay and mowing and gardens and stuff, I spotted a red-headed woodpecker.
I think they are very striking, beautiful birds.
Hope you have a great weekend.
Be sure to visit Nancy at A Rural Journal for Your Sunday Best and Jan at Murrieta 365 for SOOC Sunday.

they are wonderfully striking birds.

Wow! How do you get here so fast? I used to have a pair that lived right in my front yard, but one was hit by a car, and I haven’t seen any around since then.
Jul 09, 2011 @ 17:44:42
Yes, very beautiful & very striking, too! =)
Jul 09, 2011 @ 17:50:44
Glad you stopped by.
Jul 09, 2011 @ 17:52:56
Wow, he is gorgeous. Beautiful photo, the lichen on the fence post is wonderful.
Jul 09, 2011 @ 18:13:56
The post turned out better than the bird in the pictures! I had it on the wrong setting, and didn’t take the time to change when I noticed him. (Oops.)
Jul 09, 2011 @ 18:06:00
Wonderful SOOC shots!
Jul 09, 2011 @ 18:14:04

I finally get to see the red-headed woodpecker! We have pileated and red-bellied here but I haven’t seen a red-headed (although the red-bellies have red head too but not quite as red as the red-headed!). Thanks for sharing!
Jul 09, 2011 @ 18:45:57
I see red-bellied woodpeckers too. I don’t think I’ve seen the pileated.
Jul 09, 2011 @ 19:05:56
He’s so shiny, almost looks like he’s painted! Don’t know what happened to ours, kinda miss his noise.
Jul 09, 2011 @ 19:51:30
I almost wish I didn’t know what happened to mine~one of the pair was hit by a car. Haven’t seen many since then.
Jul 09, 2011 @ 19:20:03
These are beauties … haven’t seen any in my neck of the woods (Philly). Love your header! Saw you on Sunday Best … new follower!
Jul 09, 2011 @ 19:52:24
So glad to have you following! I haven’t been able to update my header with this year’s babies yet. Those are from last summer.
Jul 09, 2011 @ 20:45:28
He is beautiful – and looks a little sassy, too!
Jul 09, 2011 @ 21:04:02
That’s even better~I like a bird that knows how beautiful they are.
Jul 09, 2011 @ 23:15:12
Looks as if he has a story to tell. He’s very handsome.
Jul 09, 2011 @ 23:16:15
What a great comment~I’d never thought about him as a storyteller, but I love that idea. Wonder what tale he would tell.
Jul 10, 2011 @ 03:33:01
Never seen one of these before. It looks a little like a small magpie with a scarlet head.
Jul 10, 2011 @ 08:14:26
I love seeing their crimson heads against the oak trees~very striking birds.
Jul 10, 2011 @ 06:24:47
He is a handsome fella for sure!

With that bright red head, they are hard to miss when they’re around.
Jul 10, 2011 @ 08:30:31
We have many around here, but they are reclusive! Great capture, Teresa.

I love Your Sunday Best! I’m sure there are many around here too with all the trees around me, but since I lost the pair that lived just by my house, I don’t get the chance to see them very often.
